The city announced that on Tuesday, January 10th, travel lanes will switch to 2-way on Empire Street between Fountain and Weybosset, and Weybosset Street between Empire and Dorrance. The transition should be finalized before the morning commute.
Empire Street will have two lanes heading south toward Weybosset, plus one lane heading north toward Fountain. Both sides of the street will have parallel curbside parking.
The change is part of phase II of the Downtown Providence Traffic Circulator project, which is expected to relieve congestion in the downtown area. Since pedestrians and drivers have been accustomed to 1-way travel on these streets since the 1970s, everyone is advised to use extra caution and look both ways!
