The DID’s mission is to continuously enhance the quality of life in downtown Providence. By showing support for our colleagues and in some cases, pooling our resources together, we become more effective advocates for the city.
The Providence Foundation and Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy (DPPC) are our primary partners. The Providence Foundation’s core purpose is to create an environment that is conducive to growth and sustained investment making Providence, particularly downtown, the premier mid-sized city in the country. Supported by more than 140 leading corporations and institutions in Rhode Island, the Foundation uses private sector expertise to originate policies and projects that have a catalytic effect on the development of downtown and the city. Since its founding in 1974, the Foundation has supported major initiatives including the river relocation project, the creation of the Capital Center Commission, and the formation of the Downtown Improvement District and Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy.
The Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy (DPPC) is a public-private partnership formed to preserve and revitalize Providence’s historic downtown core by transforming it into a lively, cohesive and prosperous economic and cultural center through the development of exceptional public spaces. Through regular programming including story hours, arts activities, and the Thursday night Burnside Park Beer Garden Music Series, the DPPC attracts a diverse community into the space. DPPC projects will help to reinvent and redefine our city’s center, changing the way people think about the plaza by transforming it into a beautiful, usable space cherished by Rhode Islanders and visitors from near and far.
