On Saturday, July 12th, from noon to 10 pm, the Providence Rink at the Bank of America City Center will host an exclusive interactive art installation created by The Studios at Unit 2: WITHIN PROVIDENCE along with featured sound installation “Transit Lines.” Public participation is encouraged!
Rhode Island artists have collaborated to create a map of Providence in collage form on one massive canvas, displaying their own distinct styles. The community is invited to color in different sections of the map with their own memories and experiences. WITHIN PROVIDENCE creator Grant Thompson Archer imagines the finished piece as “an exercise in community relationships, free representation, and collective memory.” Sound engineer and artist, John Budrow, will also build “Transit Lines” using audiotape that will “create soft noises that mimic the sound of perceived transit as well as cast shadows over the mural.”
Starting at noon, the Partnership for Providence Parks PlayCorps will be rink-side with fun children’s activities and treats. Live performances begin at 4:30pm with the ProvSlam Youth Poetry Team, followed by local bands including Ravi Shavi and The Viennagram. Enjoy drinks from the Trinity Brewhouse Beer Garden and food from the Citizen Wing Food Truck until 10 pm.
WITHIN PROVIDENCE is sponsored by Dick Blick Art Materials, Lamar Advertising of Providence, the Providence Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Providence. For more details, visit www.providencerink.com, Facebook and Twitter.
