FirstWorks has presented world-class performing arts and education programs for 10 years! To celebrate this milestone, the organization is bringing Martha Redbone Roots Project to Providence. Hailed as “Americana’s next superstar,” Redbone soulfully fuses her Cherokee, Choctaw and African-American heritage in a vibrant gumbo of funk and R&B. Hear selections from her latest album, “Garden of Love—Songs of William Blake” at Aurora, a new lounge and art space at 276 Westminster Street, at 7:30 PM on Thursday, February 13th. Buy tickets for $15 in advance online or by calling (401) 421-4281. They’ll also be available at the door for $20.
Since 2004, FirstWorks has offered Rhode Islanders access to exciting artists including Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Wynton Marsalis, and the Joffrey Ballet. Beginning with an unprecedented collaboration with Providence’s Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, FirstWorks has produced 22 groundbreaking arts festivals, attracted more than 155,000 participants, presented over 361 international artists and innovators, engaged more than 100 nonprofit community organizations and schools, and grown into a multidimensional arts organization recognized with 15 National Endowment for the Arts grants.
